  massive war of mages that took place in the not-so-distant past which led
  to a cascade of magical force resulting in the destruction of the warlike
  mages and the god of magic and knowlede Boccob. The resulting death of th
 e deity and unbalancing of magic caused a massive geological upheaval whic
 h resulted in the deaths of millions\, the sundering of continents\, and a
 n increased scarcity of magic on wisdom. In the power vacuum that followed
 \, the land was taken over by an oppressive and questionable church which 
 followed a new doctrine of eliminating or suppressing all magic and magica
 l creatures\, feeling that the only thing the arcane and divine arts were 
 good for were destruction. The time of the campaign is set during the reig
 n of this church\, during a time of oppression and insurrection.
